Kabaret 2020

The first stage of Kabaret 2020 begins this week for performers who are wanting to try out. Auditions are being held at Trinity Hall (United Church on Second St., side door ) on Thursday, October 3rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for singers, Friday, October 4th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for actors, and Saturday, October 5th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for dancers. Kabaret also needs backstage crew and anyone interested can sign up during any of these dates and times. Kabaret writer, director and performer Mandy Belec says spots are limited.

“The show can only be so long,” says Belec. “Two hours to jam pack it full of actors, singers, dancers and special guests. It is a lot of hard work and dedication, and I hope that just because you didn’t get picked last year for singing doesn’t mean you should never try out again.”
“There are usually about six to seven spots available for singers in one show,” adds Belec, ” but forty will audition so its hard to pick and choose. Not only on their talent – but on their dedication, commitment and how well they work with others.”

“No divas allowed,” chuckles the director.

For almost fifty years, Kabaret has been the launchpad for new and seasoned performers alike who made their debuts in the local spotlight.

“It’s always so nice to see new faces come out to Kabaret auditions,” praises Belec. “Of course, it’s always nice to see old faces come back as well. We have our wonderful house band joining us once again on stage – On The Rocks.” The band includes Mark Gionet (drums), Kirk Shorrock (guitar), Connor Shorrock (guitar) and Kevin Proudfoot (guitar). Members will also be joining the judges panel for the singing auditions, and Belec says there will be a special guest judge.

“Very much looking forward to seeing some new faces come out,” continues Belec, “and check out what Kabaret is all about. Feels as though each year we aim a little higher, and try to come up with bigger and better production numbers that try and include the whole cast.”

“One big happy family – that’s what gets us through the long winters here in good ol’ K.L.”
